3 Firefighters Killed, 2 Injured While Tackling Wildfires on the Colorado-Utah Border
The firefighters were caught in a burnover as more than 1,000 personnel battled rapidly growing blazes and severe fire weather, officials said.
On Saturday, three federal wildland firefighters died and two were injured after being trapped in a burnover incident while battling the Knowles and Gore fires along the Colorado-Utah border, the U.S. Wildland Fire Service confirmed.
The Knowles and Gore fires merged with the Snyder Mesa Fire, which has scorched more than 28,000 acres as extreme wind and heat created conditions forecasters warned were primed for explosive growth.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency Saturday in Mesa County and authorized the Colorado National Guard to support firefighting operations, while Utah Governor Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service stated it stands "in grief and in our unwavering support for the loved ones left behind," with the agency emphasizing that "their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
Nationally, nearly 3 million acres have burned this year across the United States, exceeding the 10-year average as climate patterns and historic drought conditions fuel an intense wildfire season.
