Two soccer players and a betting agent are convicted of match-fixing in Hong Kong
Two players and a betting agent were convicted after investigators said the scheme covered about 30 matches and used illegal bets to rig results.
West Kowloon Court convicted former Hong Kong Under-23 player Brian Fok, Luciano Silva da Silva, and betting agent Waheed Mohammad of conspiracy to cheat at gambling in the city's largest match-fixing case.
The trio operated a gambling scheme involving intentionally losing matches, fixing more than 30 games in the First Division between 2021 and 2023 to place illegal bets.
Fok, a 32-year-old Nigerian-born defender, violated the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance by offering $10,000 per match to a Hong Kong Football Club teammate to participate in fixing.
Following the verdict, the court remanded all three defendants in custody and adjourned proceedings to May 29 for sentencing pending background reports.
Separately, the court acquitted a fourth defendant, 31-year-old footballer To Chun-kiu, of one count of conspiracy to cheat at gambling.
