At Least 5 Children Die in Monsoon Landslide at a Rohingya Camp in Bangladesh

Heavy monsoon rains triggered the landslide at a Rohingya camp, and authorities said more than 1,000 refugees had already been relocated from risky hillsides.

  • On Wednesday, a monsoon landslide swamped an Islamic school in a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, killing seven children and their teacher, Bangladesh Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammed Mizanur Rahman confirmed.
  • More than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees live in crowded, makeshift shelters on unstable hillsides cleared of forests, many having fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar that remains the subject of a genocide case at The United Nations.
  • Following landslides that killed eight others on July 6, rescuers continued operations Wednesday evening where local Fire Service and Civil Defense chief Dollar Tripura reported five injured children were rescued from the school.
  • Authorities have relocated more than 1,000 refugees from at-risk hilly areas; however, United Council of Rohingya president Sayed Ullah said "we don't see proper coordination over the accommodation of the Rohingya, and that is reflected in these accidents."
  • The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in Dhaka predicts torrential rain will persist for four days, while Bangladesh continues urging the international community to assist with repatriating refugees to Myanmar, though the process remains stalled.
