26 Dead and Dozens Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Lampedusa
Two overloaded boats capsized during a migrant crossing from Libya, killing at least 27 with dozens missing, amid increasing Mediterranean migrant deaths this year, UNHCR reported.
- On Wednesday, a boat carrying about 95 migrants capsized in international waters 14 miles south of Lampedusa, causing at least 26 deaths and leaving around a dozen missing.
- The accident occurred after two vessels left Tripoli early Wednesday, when one boat began taking on water, and all migrants transferred to the overloaded fibreglass boat that then capsized.
- Rescue efforts involved five naval vessels, including patrol boats from both the coast guard and Guardia di Finanza, alongside a helicopter and a Frontex aircraft, as authorities continued to search for survivors.
- Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni pledged to continue fighting 'unscrupulous traffickers' by 'preventing irregular departures and managing migration flows' while offering condolences to victims and survivor assistance provided by UNHCR and the Italian Red Cross.
- So far in 2025, approximately 675 migrants have lost their lives attempting the dangerous crossing through the central Mediterranean, highlighting that rescue operations alone are insufficient to resolve the underlying issues driving this persistent migration crisis.
