21 Arrests in Louisiana Fraud Enforcement Operation, AG Liz Murrill Announces

The arrests follow more than $73 million in restitution orders, while state officials say only about $14.5 million has been collected.

  • On Wednesday, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced 21 arrests for Medicaid fraud and patient abuse. Murrill also elevated the Louisiana Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to a standalone division within the state Department of Justice.
  • Investigations by the Louisiana Medicaid Fraud Control Unit targeted providers accused of false billing and patient neglect. These efforts aim to protect vulnerable citizens who rely on Medicaid for essential healthcare services.
  • Charges include billing for services not rendered, falsifying CPR certification records, and physical abuse of patients. Prosecutors cite cases involving claims during periods when recipients were hospitalized, in daycare, or incarcerated.
  • Since taking office, Murrill's office has indicted 95 individuals and secured 105 convictions. Although more than $73 million in restitution has been ordered, collection remains difficult because providers are barred from Medicaid upon arrest.
  • Louisiana Department of Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein reported his agency reviewed more than 4,200 fraud complaints this year. The department collaborates with the Attorney General's office to recover overpayments and remove fraudulent providers from Medicaid.
