2027: Reps ask INEC to disqualify candidates not listed in submitted party registers
INEC says parties that fail to submit membership registers will be barred from fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections.
- On Tuesday, the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to disqualify 2027 election candidates whose names are missing from party membership registers under the Electoral Act 2026.
- The Supreme Court restored these provisions on September 24, 2026, after setting aside lower court judgments that previously declared them unconstitutional, confirming consistency with the 1999 Constitution.
- Confirming the commission's stance on Wednesday, INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education Mohammed Haruna stated that parties violating register submission requirements will not be allowed to field 2027 candidates.
- Enforcement applies to all elective positions, including state Houses of Assembly, with Haruna noting that some parties may struggle to field candidates amid media speculation surrounding figures like Kingsley Chinda and Ovie Omo-Agege.
- Chairman Bayo Balogun emphasized that diligent enforcement of Sections 77 to 77 is necessary to prevent disputes and reduce litigation volume arising from irregularities in party nominations and electoral activities.
