Nigeria: 2027 - INEC Seeks 1.4m Corps Members for Polls

INEC said corps members will make up most of the 1.4 million ad hoc staff needed to run the 2027 general election.

  • On Monday, Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan visited National Youth Service Corps Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu in Abuja to formally request over 1.4 million corps members for the 2027 general election.
  • Amupitan noted the commission cannot conduct elections without the NYSC, citing the 2023 general election where approximately 1.2 million ad hoc staff were deployed, with over 70 per cent drawn from NYSC ranks.
  • Deployment requirements for 2027 include 707,384 corps members for the January 16, 2027, Presidential and National Assembly election, plus an equal number for the February 6, 2027, Governorship and Houses of Assembly polls, totaling 1,414,768.
  • Nafiu pledged full NYSC support for the 2027 general elections and off-cycle polls, noting that the transition to Gen Z corps members, known for their digital proficiency, will benefit INEC's technology-driven accreditation systems.
  • Preparation for off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti on June 20 and Osun on August 16 continues, which Amupitan described as "critical litmus tests for our innovations before the 2027 general election.
