- Politkovskaya had "predicted" Russia's trajectory under Vladimir Putin, warning in the early 2000s that journalists must show "total servility to Putin" or face prison; her editor Sokolov stated she had "predicted" everything happening today.
- She was gunned down on October 7, 2006, Putin's 54th birthday, after criticizing Ramzan Kadyrov, whom she called an "enemy of the Chechen people"; the mastermind behind her murder remains unidentified.
