2 Vancouver Island Men Lauded for Rescue of Drowned Man From Saanich Lake

Josh Nash and Alex Boog performed five or six rounds of CPR before the man regained consciousness and was transferred to paramedics.

  • On March 28, 2026, the Lifesaving Society's BC and Yukon Branch awarded Josh Nash and Alex Boog the Silver Medal for Bravery for heroic actions during a Durrance Lake rescue in Vancouver.
  • During an August 10, 2025, incident at Durrance Lake in Saanich, two men struggled near a steep underwater shelf; Nash dove 10 to 12 feet to locate the submerged victim, Sonu.
  • Boog, a Commonwealth lifeguard since late 2021, performed five or six rounds of CPR on shore until the man regained consciousness. "Having someone's life in your hands is significantly different," Boog said.
  • Nash's wife, a fluent Hindi speaker, identified the missing person during the panic after hearing calls for help. Paramedics transferred the man to safety in stable condition.
  • Nash emphasized that background did not matter during the emergency; he and Boog hope the story inspires responsible water safety and highlights the value of helping random strangers regardless of origin.
