2 US regions lead ranking of 2025 population growth: See full list
South Carolina rose 1.46% in the latest state-by-state count, while only five states posted declines, SmartAsset said.
The Palmetto State led United States population growth from 2024 to 2025 with a 1.46% increase, edging out Idaho by two-hundredths of a percentage point.
All five states topping the population growth leaderboard sit in the South or the Rocky Mountains, reflecting a clear geographic pattern in where people choose to live.
Utah claims the youngest population, being three years younger than any other state and having the highest percentage of children under 5 at nearly 6.5%, while Maine and New Hampshire hold the oldest populations.
Falling 0.29%, Vermont recorded the largest year-to-year population drop. Only five states, including California, saw population declines, according to the figures.
Growth spurs economic activity by increasing the workforce and consumer base, though declining populations may also offer specific economic benefits to residents, according to research from SmartAsset.
