2 teens rescued after attempting to ice fish in northern Minnesota
Two brothers aged 13 and 14 fell through roughly 1-inch thick ice while ice fishing on Straight Lake and were rescued by emergency teams without injury.
- Rescuers pulled two juveniles ages 13 and 14 from Straight Lake Tuesday afternoon after they fell through the ice while floating inside an Otter Sled.
- Eager to fish on early ice, Gabe Savage, 14-year-old, and his 13-year-old brother attempted to ice fish on about 1-inch thick ice at Straight Lake, Osage, Minnesota, using an ice pick to slide.
- Authorities were called at 2:51 p.m., and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources first arrived, broke ice at the Straight Lake public access, and a DNR Conservation Officer and Hubbard County Sheriff's Office deputy reached the juveniles by boat after about 25 minutes.
- Paramedics checked Gabe Savage and his 13-year-old brother, who were not injured, and the Becker County Sheriff's Office urged everyone to stay off area lakes until ice thickens.
- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recommends avoiding ice under 4 inches for people on foot, notes ice safety varies due to currents and snow cover, and Becker County Sheriff's Office drone video showed thin, vibrating ice.
