Two People Die in Separate Drowning Incidents at Nanaimo, B.C., Beaches Wednesday Evening
Police say foul play is not suspected as investigators and the BC Coroners Service examine both deaths after separate rescue efforts failed.
Nanaimo RCMP responded to two unrelated drowning incidents on Wednesday, May 20, resulting in the deaths of an adult woman at Departure Bay Beach and an adult man near the Brechin Boat Launch.
Emergency crews including Nanaimo Search and Rescue and two aircraft from the 442 Rescue Squadron at CFB Comox searched for the woman starting at about 6 p.m., locating her deceased at approximately 9 p.m.
While that search was underway, first-responders were called to Stewart Avenue at 7:30 p.m. for a man in distress; despite life-saving measures by Nanaimo Harbour Patrol and BCEHS, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The B.C. Coroners Service is examining the circumstances of both cases, with investigators confirming early indications suggest no foul play was involved in either fatality.
Reserve Const. Gary O'Brien noted that "witnessing a sudden medical emergency or loss of life can have a significant emotional impact," urging affected individuals to contact Nanaimo RCMP victim services at 755-3100.
