1 Dead, 1 Critical After Boat Strikes Channel Marker in Barnegat Bay
Six people were hurt, including two critically, after the boat struck a channel marker and two occupants were thrown into the water.
A 28-year-old Barnegat man died Monday after a boat struck a day marker in Barnegat Bay, with six people injured in the 5:45 p.m. crash off 63rd Street in Long Beach Township.
Foggy conditions plagued the water at the time, with visibility particularly poor near high tide according to resident Steve Helewa of Brant Beach. Long Beach Island waters have seen serious accidents in recent years, including Dr. Karl Chen's 2025 death from a 27-foot boat.
Two people were ejected into the water and transported in critical condition. Witness Sean Stretch said he saw 'a guy laying down on the floor and he was pretty lifeless,' while Ford Hansen reported observing two people by the channel marker.
Gunnar Pearson from Barnegat, one of the six injured, was flown to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Four other occupants sustained minor injuries and were released; New Jersey State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
The crash occurred days after New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau launched its annual safe boating week to begin summer season. Investigators continue examining the damaged vessel as the incident adds to a pattern of fatal boating accidents off Long Beach Island in recent years.
