2,000-year-old Peruvian cultural artifact recovered in Montreal
The seller gave up the bowl without compensation after Peruvian authorities said it held cultural and historical significance.
On July 16, the RCMP formally presented a recovered 2,000-year-old pre-Hispanic bowl to the Peruvian Consulate in Montreal, marking its return to Peru after identification at a local auction house.
Peruvian authorities identified the bowl at a Montreal auction house in late June, determining it held significant cultural and historical value, which prompted the auction house to suspend the sale.
Following a formal request from the Peruvian Embassy to Global Affairs Canada, the RCMP initiated the repatriation process and secured the artifact's transfer to the Peruvian Consulate.
Authorities resolved the matter without charges after the Montreal seller agreed to relinquish the bowl without financial compensation, claiming it was inherited from a previous owner.
Insp. Dawn Morris-Little, RCMP financial crime director, said it is "satisfying for us to contribute to its safe return," noting authorities identified only one bowl as historically significant among three initially listed.
