2 suspects identified in stabbing of off-duty NYPD detective

Police said the suspects stole the detective’s chain and fled on a bike after stabbing him up to seven times.

  • On Friday, two suspects stabbed off-duty Det. Jose Mercedes during a robbery attempt on East 208th Street in the Bronx. Mercedes was stabbed up to seven times before chasing his attackers, who fled empty-handed.
  • Police identified the suspects as D'Angelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia, both undocumented immigrants from the Dominican Republic living in the United States illegally. Detectives believe the pair fled the city following the stabbing.
  • Caraballo has five prior arrests in the city, while a federal judge ordered Mejia deported last year. Both men were previously arrested by Border Patrol and released despite their criminal histories.
  • DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed the suspects "were RELEASED into the country by the Biden administration" and blamed sanctuary policies, stating the crime "could have been prevented" under different enforcement.
  • Mercedes was released from Jacobi Hospital on Monday, greeted by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and fellow officers. Police urge anyone with information on the suspects to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 577-TIPS.
