Man Who Killed B.C. Family of 6 in 1982 Denied Parole Again
The Parole Board of Canada said David Ennis still poses an elevated reoffending risk and lacks confirmed housing, work and a release plan.
- The Parole Board of Canada denied full parole to David Ennis, formerly David Shearing, for the fourth time on Aug 19. The decision determined the convict remains an undue risk to society if released.
- Ennis is serving a life sentence for the 1982 murders of six family members at Wells Gray Provincial Park. He fatally shot four adults and held two children captive, sexually assaulting the eldest before killing them.
- The Parole Board says the aggravating factor in its latest denial was Ennis's decision to "callously and viciously" end the lives of six people to satisfy his "sexually deviant fantasies." He waived his right to a hearing in March.
- Despite identifying his wife and two friends as supports, Ennis failed to provide confirmed employment or accommodation. The board found his possibility of reintegrating into society is low, with his risk of reoffending never completely eliminated.
- Ennis was previously denied day and full parole in 2008, 2012, and 2021. The board notes that if he were to commit another sexual offence, it could result in death or serious harm, keeping his risk profile unmanageable.
