'We Were Denied Basic Dignity': Family of Teen Killed by Police Officer Makes Demands
HOMEWOOD, ALABAMA, JUN 24 – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples during a suspicious vehicle inquiry, amid family demands for transparency and release of bodycam footage.
- On Monday evening around 9:30 p.m., an 18-year-old named Jabari Latrell Peoples was fatally wounded by a police officer at the Homewood Soccer Park.
- The officer approached a suspicious vehicle where Peoples resisted arrest, physically struggled with the officer, freed himself, and then grabbed a handgun from the open driver's side door pocket.
- The officer discharged one shot in self-defense; Peoples collapsed while still holding the handgun. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was declared deceased at 10:06 p.m.
- Peoples' family, who was notified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office on Tuesday morning, denies he was armed or aggressive and demands release of all footage, the officer's identity, and an independent investigation.
- The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the case as a homicide, and Mayor Terrence Windham calls for due process and transparency while the community seeks clarity and accountability.
