18 Injured, 4 Critical After Firing Along Assam-Arunachal Border

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said talks are underway as police investigate the border firing that left 18 people injured, four critically.

  • The violence stems from a long-standing boundary dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh over alleged encroachment. Residents confronted others regarding land occupation claimed by Assam before the situation escalated into gunfire.
  • Four critically injured victims were transferred to Dibrugarh Medical College after initial treatment at Gogamukh Rural Hospital. Among the injured were Durgeshwar Patir, Rohit Doley, Nagaraj Doley, Bigneshwar Patir, Pame Pegu, Sanjay Tayung, Utpal Doley, and Jan Doley.
  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed police reinforcements arrived at the scene on Monday. He directed the Assam Police to protect state land while coordinating with Arunachal Pradesh officials to de-escalate and investigate.
  • Both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh remain engaged in dialogue to resolve boundary disputes despite the violence. Arunachal Pradesh home minister Mama Natung recently emphasized commitment to resolving disputes through regional committees and maintaining peace.
