Abandoned Puppies Rescued From Walmart Parking Lot in Livermore
The puppies are estimated to need routine medical care before adoption, and some may be ready for new homes within a week or two, officials said.
On Wednesday, a Good Samaritan rescued 16 puppies abandoned in a Livermore Walmart parking lot, though one puppy from the initial group of 17 died after being struck by a vehicle.
The East Bay SPCA, which holds a three-year contract with the Livermore Police Department, accepted the 16 survivors for medical and behavioral evaluations at its Dublin and Oakland locations.
Jes Cytron, East Bay SPCA Vice President of Operations, stated that taking in the group is "no small feat," though the puppies have acclimated well to shelter life.
Estimated to be 9-week-old Border Collie mixes, the puppies will be ready for adoption within the next week or two following vaccinations, microchips, and spay or neuter surgeries.
Cytron suggested owners often lack resources for unwanted litters, while the Livermore Police Department had not replied as of Friday to an inquiry regarding whether the abandonment is being investigated.
