140 Kauai Coffee Jobs Saved Through New Land Lease Agreement
The agreement also opens the door to new farm-technology, machinery and visitor-experience jobs while continuing a community fund that has given $640,000 to West Side projects.
- On Thursday, Brue Baukol Capital Partners , a Colorado-based investment firm, finalized a new long-term lease with Kauai Coffee Company, preserving roughly 140 jobs at the 3,100-acre farm after months of uncertainty.
- Kauai Coffee Company faced potential permanent closure earlier this year after issuing mass layoff notices in January for 136 employees, following nearly two years of unsuccessful negotiations between parent company Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA and landowner BBCP.
- The agreement secures employment for a deeply rooted workforce; 30% have worked at Kauai Coffee for over 10 years, with three employees having 50-year tenures. The lease continues the Fair Trade Community Development program, which has provided $640,000 to West Side community projects.
- County Council Chair Mel Rapozo said Thursday the agreement demonstrates that "if the goal is to benefit the community, then people can come to agreement," while MZB-USA President Matthew Smith said the lease ensures "the local operation has the stability and support it needs to thrive."
- Strategic investments in farm technology, machinery, and visitor experiences will create new skilled-trade positions including welders, electricians, and machinery operators, while the lease provides flexibility to explore additional agricultural activities on the property's Important Agricultural Lands .
