$122M in EV rebate claims made since start of new program as dealers wait to be paid

Dealers say reimbursement delays are straining cash flow as Transport Canada processes 24,389 claims and works on a fix for rejected submissions.

  • Canadians claimed more than $122 million in federal subsidies since Ottawa reintroduced its electric vehicle rebate program on Feb. 16, but many car dealers report they are still waiting to receive reimbursement funds.
  • Dealerships often advance these rebates on final bills before seeking reimbursement from Ottawa, says the Canadian Auto Dealers Association. Some dealers await more than $200,000 in owed rebates, straining cash flow.
  • On Tuesday, Transport Canada published the new EVAP database showing 24,389 claims. A technical glitch currently prevents a breakdown of dollar figures per claim, which the department will update once fixed.
  • Responding to inquiries from The Canadian Press, Transport Canada stated, "There is no hold on repayments; complete and validated claims continue to be processed." The department is reviewing cases where administrative errors caused rejected claims.
  • Ottawa set a target of putting 840,000 new EVs on the road under the program. At 4,088 claims, the Toyota bZ was the most popular model, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox EV with 3,065 claims.
