Lawmakers concerned over Google’s plan to acquire AI models from Spirit Airlines data
Lawmakers said the $10 million sale would include 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, raising worker privacy concerns.
More than 120 US lawmakers raised concerns on Thursday about Google's $10 million acquisition of internal data from defunct Spirit Airlines to train artificial intelligence systems.
Following Spirit's closure in May, Google won an August auction for internal company data including spreadsheets, calendars, and marketing records as part of the airline's asset liquidation.
Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Steven Horsford led lawmakers warning the sale includes 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, urging Google to "exclude employee information from the transaction to the greatest extent possible."
On October 5, a privacy ombudsman recommended a bankruptcy judge approve the deal at an October 14 hearing after excluding passenger data from 97 million Spirit customers.
Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, said the deal carries "tremendous implications for workers across the economy," while Mercor submitted a competing $7.5 million bid for the employee data.
