- On Sunday, 11-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan became the youngest player in history to earn the Woman Grandmaster title at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, after winning eight points across 11 games.
- Sivanandan, from Harrow, London, taught herself chess via YouTube during Covid-19 lockdowns, later earning three qualifying norms and passing the 2300 rating threshold required for the Woman Grandmaster title.
- In July, Sivanandan became the youngest girl to earn an International Master norm at the Dole Open in France, also defeating a Grandmaster rated above 2600 in a classical game.
- Surpassing the 2002 record held by Kateryna Lagno, who earned the Woman Grandmaster title at 12, Sivanandan's achievement marks a historic milestone for the English chess prodigy.
- Sivanandan noted that chess helps with "lots of other things like maths, how to calculate," and she intends to "keep making history" beyond this record-breaking achievement.
