100-year-old WWII veteran finally attends prom more than 80 years later
Students and community members arranged the dance after learning he missed his own prom when he was called to World War II service.
A 100-year-old Illinois veteran, Ray Svejnoha, attended his first high school prom this month with students from Metea Valley High School in Aurora, fulfilling a milestone missed more than 80 years ago during World War II service.
Students from the Tech Connect club met Svejnoha through technology assistance at Independence Village senior community. Club adviser Carey Peterson organized the surprise after learning the veteran never attended his senior prom.
Before the dance, community members prepared Svejnoha with a haircut, manicure, and tuxedo fitting. He arrived in a vintage trolley decorated with balloons and streamers before joining students on the dance floor.
Svejnoha told attendees, "After I heard them, well, I was just about as excited, too, but it was so nice of them to even think about it." Students held a sign reading "82 years late, but right on time."
Club adviser Carey Peterson described the event as a gesture of gratitude for a veteran who sacrificed his youth. "We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to share with our students, modeling what it means to give back," Peterson said.
