100 Mile House timber supply impacted by wildfires

Wildfire damage to immature stands could force a lower short-term allowable annual cut, while the chief forester reviews new harvest projections.

  • On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Ministry of Forests strategic land manager Kane Copley presented the 100 Mile House Timber Supply Area Timber Supply Analysis Discussion Paper to council, outlining projected timber harvest reductions.
  • Severe wildfire activity significantly impacted the 100 Mile House TSA, with 109,000 hectares burned in 2017, 8,000 in 2018, and 81,000 in 2021, destroying immature stands representing future growing stock.
  • The review suggests the annual harvest limit could drop from 702,000 cubic metres to 440,000 cubic metres, with Copley noting the required lower harvest duration was expanded from five decades to nine.
  • Public feedback on the review is invited by Aug. 25, Copley said, before the Ministry of Forests delivers analysis to the chief forester for determining the new allowable annual cut.
  • Copley noted licensees could potentially utilize over 300,000 cubic metres of additional biomass annually by harvesting tops, bark, branches, and foliage, though he cautioned such practice may not be economically realistic.
