Man Who Police Say Shot 2 Officers, Killing 1, Just South of Indianapolis Has Been Arrested, According to Indiana State Police

- On Feb. 16, 2026, Beech Grove Police said Officer Brian Elliott was killed and the suspect, Kenneth Johnson, was taken into custody by IMPD SWAT.
- Officers were dispatched just after 5:30 p.m. Monday to the 100 block of Diplomat Court at the Beech Meadow apartments north of Beech Grove High School and were shot after arriving.
- Authorities described the suspect as a six-foot, 165-pound Black male in a royal blue hoodie and blue pants; IMPD ordered Beech Grove residents to shelter in place and locked down Beech Grove High School, later clearing it.
- In statements after the shooting, Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice said, `It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that today, we lost one of our very own`; a second officer remains in stable condition and is expected to survive.
- State police noted that Indiana State Police issued a Blue Alert, and Beech Grove High School plans to hold classes Tuesday with counselors on hand, authorities said.
