San Francisco Bay Search Continues After Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz

One person died and three remained missing after a pontoon boat carrying 19 people capsized during a memorial service.

  • On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the 49-foot cabin cruiser Volare capsized about 600 yards west of Alcatraz Island while carrying 20 people. Emergency crews and good Samaritans rescued 16 survivors from the San Francisco Bay.
  • San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said the vessel was conducting a memorial service when witnesses reported rough seas caused it to take on water and roll over in the bay.
  • Rescuers confirmed one fatality: 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa of Sutter County. Three passengers remained missing while a multi-agency search deployed 11 vessels and helicopters across 950 square nautical miles.
  • On Thursday, July 16, police recovered the body of 58-year-old Tondra Miller near Treasure Island while conducting sonar scanning. The sunken Volare rests at an estimated depth of 120 feet on a rocky seabed.
  • The San Francisco Police Department continues coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard to evaluate recovery options for the Volare. Strong tidal currents and wind challenges complicate efforts to locate two remaining missing passengers.
