1 killed, 2 injured after Panama-flagged vessel hit in drone attack in Black Sea
Ukraine said the strikes were part of Russia’s campaign against Black Sea shipping and global food security.
- Russian drones struck two foreign-flagged civilian ships in the Black Sea, killing one crew member and wounding five others. The vessels, flying flags of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Panamanian-flagged, were leaving Ukrainian ports when attacked.
- Oleksii Kuleba, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, denounced the strike as evidence that Russia targets freedom of navigation. "The world cannot get used to civilian sailors becoming a target for Russian weapons," Kuleba said.
- Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Oblast Military Administration, reported the vessels have resumed voyages despite the attack. Separately, strikes in southern Odesa caused a fire at a truck parking lot, leaving one person dead and four others injured.
- The strikes occurred amid a wave of widespread overnight Russian attacks across Ukraine. Ukraine's air force reported that local air defenses intercepted 79 of 90 Russian drones launched from Thursday evening into Friday morning.
- Russia has repeatedly targeted merchant traffic in the corridor, including strikes on three foreign ships on May 29 and rescue boats on June 8. Officials warn these assaults aim to complicate Ukrainian logistics and undermine global food security.
