Iowa DNR Investigating Fatal Boat Crash in Clear Lake

The DNR said alcohol was not a factor as it investigates the crash that killed a fishing boat driver and injured his passenger.

  • A man operating a fishing boat died Thursday morning after a collision with another vessel on the west end of Clear Lake, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources confirmed.
  • The crash occurred on the west end of Clear Lake, an area locally known as Little Lake, around 8:30 a.m. when two boats collided.
  • Emergency responders from the Clear Lake Police Department, Clear Lake Fire Department, Ventura Fire, and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene. A passenger from the fishing boat was transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.
  • The Iowa DNR is investigating the incident and determined alcohol was not a contributing factor. Passengers in the second boat were uninjured in the collision.
  • This marks the second fatal boating accident on the lake in July, following the death of 14-year-old Maya Cano of Dyersville in a July 4 personal watercraft collision.
