UK police arrest about 1,000 suspected child sex offenders monthly as AI and encrypted platforms complicate investigations, with arrests doubling over three years, National Crime Agency reports.
- Police across the UK are arresting 1,000 suspected paedophiles every month, with 252 arrests made during a single week in January including 118 charged.
- Rob Jones, the NCA's director of general operations, said algorithms and online groups have rationalised offenders' behaviour by bringing like-minded abusers together, while mainstream social media are used to identify and abuse vulnerable children.
- Offences now include paid livestreamed abuse costing as little as £20; courts sentenced 35 people and 407 children were safeguarded while Becky Riggs said officers work relentlessly to target abusers.
- Number 10 said measures will target `vile illegal content created by AI` and could open the door to an Australia-style social-media age limit, urging tech companies and social media platforms to act with urgency.
- Trusted adults must have clear, accessible guidance so they can recognise harm and know where to turn, officials said.
